Clarke\n\nAt Imagineering, we are constantly exploring new ways to connect with our guests – to surprise them, make them smile, and open their minds to magic - not just in our pa rks and resorts, but everywhere around the world.\n\nAt Walt Disney Imagin eering Research and Development this "magic" emerges from the application of world-class technology and everything from new Guest-facing experiences to new tools for Imagineers and Cast Members who power our parks and brin g that magic to life. Our team of engineers, designers, artists and scient ists share a passion for solving impossible problems and building ground-b reaking experiences.\n\nAt Disney Research Imagineering, we pursue and app ly the science behind the magic: unlocking new opportunities for Imagineer ing in all aspects of project lifecycles, from early phase creative ideati on to deployment.\n\nWe are seeking a Research Scientist to lead foundatio nal and applied research at the intersection of artificial intelligence an d spatial media. This role involves designing, developing, and deploying c utting-edge generative models to support creative, architectural, and expe riential design workflows across Disney’s themed entertainment portfolio.\ n\nAs a key scientific contributor and thought leader, you will collaborat e with cross-functional teams of researchers, engineers, and creatives. Yo ur work will span exploratory investigations, peer-reviewed research, and the translation of experimental technologies into applied tools for design and fabrication.\n\nYou will report to the Associate Lab Director and con tribute to the AI/ML research strategy for Imagineering R&D.\n\nThis is a full-time role.\n\nWhat You Will Do\nConduct original research in generati ve AI, focusing on 3D model generation, scene synthesis, and simulation.\n \nDevelop machine learning architectures and algorithms that enhance the c reation, visualization, and physical realization of themed environments.\n \nPrototype AI-driven systems that support CAD/BIM workflows, virtual prod uction, and spatial design.\n\nIntegrate AI with real-time rendering engin es, 3D modeling pipelines, and mixed-reality platforms.\n\nEvaluate genera tive models for feasibility, fidelity, controllability, and integration in to creative pipelines.\n\nCollaborate with internal and external research partners, including academic institutions, industry labs, and vendors.\n\n Translate scientific insights into working prototypes that bridge digital design and physical implementation.\n\nMentor junior researchers and contr ibute to the technical direction of AI initiatives within the lab.\n\nRequ ired Qualifications & Skills\n5+ years of research experience in machine l earning, computer vision, or computational graphics with published work in top-tier conferences/journals (e.g. SIGGRAPH, NeurIPS, CVPR, and others). \n\nExpertise in generative 3D AI technologies such as NeRFs, diffusion mo dels, implicit neural representations, or volumetric rendering.\n\nProfici ency in machine learning libraries (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and program ming languages such as Python and C++.\n\nExperience working with 3D asset creation and rendering tools (e.g., Blender, Unreal Engine, Unity, Houdin i).\n\nDeep understanding of data-driven design tools and interactive AI s ystems for spatial computing or immersive storytelling.\n\nDemonstrated ab ility to bridge theoretical research with real-world implementation.\n\nSt rong communication skills with the ability to present complex ideas to mul tidisciplinary teams.\n\nA desire to work in a creative environment where technical and creative experts collaborate and challenge each other every day to achieve truly groundbreaking solutions\n\nPreferred Qualifications\ nFamiliarity with robotics, digital fabrication, or construction automatio n as it relates to AI integration.\n\nExperience with AI-assisted tools in architecture, entertainment, or XR applications.\n\nBackground in physica l simulation, procedural modeling, or multimodal (text-to-3D) generation.\ n\nTrack record of technology transfer, patents, or deployed AI systems.\n \nExperience with generative models for animation, such as motion transfor mers, motion diffusion models, variational motion encoders, or reinforceme nt learning for animated control.\n\nExperience integrating animation syst ems into real-time engines (e.g., Unreal Engine with Control Rig, Unity wi th Mecanim or custom solutions).\n\nFamiliarity with motion capture data p ipelines, retargeting techniques, and animation blending.\n\nDemonstrated ability to bridge technical research and production-quality animation syst ems, ideally through previous work in film, games, or immersive media.\n\n Contributions to open-source projects or prior internships in research lab s or innovation teams.\n\nInterest in construction tech, architecture, or fabrication workflows is a plus.\n\nEducation\nPhD in Computer Science, El ectrical Engineering, Computational Design, or a related field, with speci alization in AI/ML or 3D graphics.\n\nAdditional Information\nThis role is located in Glendale, CA.\n\nBenefits and Perks: Disney offers a rewards p ackage to help you live your best life.
