Biography
Gun Bang received his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2014 from Korea University in Seoul, Rep. of Korea. He specializes in total variational optimization for enhancing the visual quality of video coding. Since joining ETRI in 2000, he currently holds the position of Principal Scientist and Standard Expert Committee Member at Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, Deajeon, Rep. of Korea. He also conducted research on video compression while serving as a visiting scientist at MIT RLE ATSP group, MA, USA from 2011 to 2012, before participating in HEVC and VVC standardization. His work focuses on standardizing immersive video compression as a co-chair of both the MPEG-INVR and GSC (Gaussian Splat Coding) groups within ISO/IEC JCT 1/SC29 WG4 and WG7, respectively. His research topics are mainly 2D video and 3D video coding, human visual quality assessment for video coding, point cloud and mesh representations of multiview video, and neural representation for video.
